Pharmacological Experiments
During the late 40's time period, researchers at Harvard University started to perform testing using diethylstilbestrol on pregnant women. Now this diethylstilbestrol, in simpler terms, was a synthetic estrogen and the only reason they were testing with this was for science. All they wanted to know was how this one substance could effect pregnant women and their children and had no real grounds to be performing these tests. However, this didn't matter and they performed the tests anyway and this ended up causing a very high number of miscarriages and even then, a lot of the babies that ended up actually being born had extremely low birth weights. To make matters worse, not did these women just end up having miscarriages or sick children, they also weren't told that any of these tests were going on which makes this testing just extremely unethical.
Another pharmacological test that occurred was in 1962 at the Laurel Children's Center in Maryland. This testing was taking place to try to figure out the best treatment for acne in teens. Now, this is a good cause that would seem very harmless, however, whatever was in the different acne medications that were being given happened to be giving the children that were being tested on severe liver damage. In fact, over half of the test subjects were getting severe liver damage from this testing and even though the scientists were fully aware of this, they continued to perform the tests. This lack for human safety and carelessness about whether or not other people are being hurt in the experimentation makes this experiment yet another completely unethical one.
